The Coffee Bar Mission District which we designed utilizes only passive cooling (no HVAC). At certain times, the sun can be overwhelming. An existing roll down door offers relief, but blocks the light and views entirely. A shading device composed of alternating coffee cups with their bottoms removed preserves the daylight and views. The distinct reflective qualities of the cups' interior and exterior surfaces and the negative spaces formed by their circular rims provide a subtly glowing and complex sculpture within a shallow depth.
