This all new Training Academy for the Arizona Diamondbacks includes the Master Plan of an all
new campus located in the Dominican Republic. The overall concept for the facility is to provide
an academic setting immersed in vernacular tropical architecture and landscaping. To achieve
this, the facility was separated into district buildings for each part of the program, creating
exterior “quads” or courtyards that then respond to the program. The dual level pitched roofs
serve as a contemporary update to tropical roofs, protecting from the sun and rain, while
remaining tall to allow the heat to escape. Lush native landscape is integrated between the
buildings, highlighting the tropical area. One unique focus of the site are stands of existing laurel
trees, which are used to both separate functions, but also as intermediate gathering places.
