Founder Paul Haydu's Annual Chili Cook Off Threatened by COVID

February 9, 2021

Over several years, our founder Paul Haydu has hosted an almost annual Chili Cook Off. The results have been a growing event with camaraderie and a healthy dose of competition.

The question for 2020? Was there a way to continue this tradition during a global pandemic? Here's what transpired...

Step 1) Establish a committee to begin the process of figuring out how to accomplish. Meet often over screens.

Step 2) Design a logo appropriate to both a chili competition and a pandemic...

Step 3) Have the logo made into a rubber stamp so you can apply the logo to everything.

Step 4) Come up with ideas for announcements and branding that no so subtly lay down the rules of the competition.

Step 5) Come up with much needed SWAG. Design special labels for much needed SWAG.

Step 6) Come up with labels for contestant entrants, and hand tie the hang tag labels.

Step 9) Hand letter said labels for each contestant, using Le Corbusier stencils, of course.

Step 10) Come up with more SWAG, including hard to find goodies like hand made sanitizer based with high octane alcohol. Again, design a label and use logo on everything.

Seriously... on EVERYTHING.

Step 11) Have contestants drop off their entries to one centralized location for processing into sanitized deliverables...

Step 12) Webcast the assembly of the contestants' entries so all participants could ensure sanitation protocols were kept...

Step 13) Vacuum seal each entry in a sanitized bag, labeled and ready to go for tasters/particpants (pre-made cocktail at the ready, top right)

Step 14) Provide the ubiquitous SWAG of all time, a TOTE for each participant/taster to carry everything home in...

Step 15) Have participants open their totes at home ensuring all is in order.

Step 16) Have participants heat up the contestants using a sanitized method (heating the individual packets in hot water)

Step 17) Have participants get ready for tasting.

Step 18) Gather around each other via our glowing screens, taste, toast, and judge...

Step 19) And finally... hopefully inspire the next generation of cooks.
